Visit of the State Secretary of the Latvian Foreign Ministry, Andrejs Pildegovičs to the Republic of Kazakhstan

On 10 July in Astana, the State Secretary of the Latvian Foreign Ministry, Andrejs Pildegovičs, met with the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Roman Vassilenko. The meeting addressed current bilateral relations between Latvia and Kazakhstan, their economic cooperation and the outlook for the EU-Kazakhstan relationship. Latest developments in Central Asian regional cooperation and other issues in international politics were also discussed.

The parties appreciated the friendly and constructive relationship between Latvia and Kazakhstan established over the past 25 years since both countries set up their diplomatic relations.

State Secretary Pildegovičs made note of the successful ongoing cooperation between Latvia and Kazakhstan in the field of education: an increasing number of Kazakh students choose to study in Latvia, taking opportunities to receive education according to European standards, and contacts are being developed among the universities of both countries. Andrejs Pildegovičs stressed that Kazakhstan is a major partner in the development of transport corridors and trade flows between Europe and Asia; in light of this, Latvia accords special importance to both countries working closely together in the transport and transit sector. During the conversation, mutual interest was expressed in building cooperation in the use of forestry and space technologies.

Andrejs Pildegovičs is in Kazakhstan as a member of the delegation accompanying the President of Latvia, Raimonds Vējonis, on a working visit. President Vējonis took part in the events of the National Day of Latvia at Astana Expo 2017 and met with the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Bakytzhan Sagintayev. The President of Latvia also opened a transport and logistics conference organised by the VAS “Latvijas dzelzceļš” (Latvian Railway) as part of the international exposition.
