THE PROSPECTS OF KAZAKHSTAN-LATVIAN COOPERATION IN THE TRANSPORT INDUSTRY WERE DISCUSSED RIGA
The first meeting of the Kazakh-Latvian working group on transport was held in the capital of Latvia – Riga.
The meeting was co-chaired by First Vice-Minister for Investments and Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan Roman Sklyar and State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Latvia Kaspars Ozolins.
The parties discussed the current state and prospects of cooperation between Kazakhstan and Latvia on-air communication, rail container transport, international road transport and transport logistics.
The growing importance of container transportation in the direction of China-Europe is noted. Latvia sees Kazakhstan as a strategic partner in this direction, and in this connection has informed about the work on activation of transportations by the container train “Baltika-Transit”. The Kazakh side confirmed the interest in cooperation for the use of the transit potentials of the two countries.
At the same time, the Kazakh side invited Latvian companies to participate in the development of a logistics hub in the territory of the FEZ “Khorgos – Eastern Gate”. Taking into account mutual interest, the parties agreed to continue negotiations on this issue.
Also, the Latvian side shared the experience of introducing digital and green technologies in transport. The sides will continue to exchange information on the work in this direction.
In general, bilateral relations between Kazakhstan and Latvia in the field of transport show positive dynamics. In 2017, the volume of export-import freight traffic between the two countries amounted to 218.57 thousand tons, an increase of 6.11 tons compared with 2016 (212.46 thousand tons).
As a result of the discussions and agreements reached, the parties signed a protocol.
